<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #1f3349; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Latitude and longitude are a pair of numbers (coordinates) used to describe a position on the plane of a geographic coordinate system. The numbers are in decimal degrees format and range from -90 to 90 for latitude and -180 to 180 for longitude.

<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #1f3349; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 18px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
For example, Washington DC has a latitude <code style="background: rgba(31, 51, 73, 0.05); border-radius: 3px; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: Menlo, "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono", Monaco, Consolas, monospace; font-size: 13.5px; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px; padding: 2px 4px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">38.8951
and longitude <code style="background: rgba(31, 51, 73, 0.05); border-radius: 3px; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: Menlo, "Bitstream Vera Sans Mono", Monaco, Consolas, monospace; font-size: 13.5px; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 0px; padding: 2px 4px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">-77.0364
.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we decided to ask Google for some interesting facts about Turkeys. We learned that turkeys can swim, that baby turkeys are called poults, and most importantly that in the fall turkeys eat bugs.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To that end, we primarily focused on fixing mapalist bugs in November. Here are just a few of the many bugs that our engineering team squashed.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Maps with more than 25,000 pins were not rendering well - fixed!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The pin filter was ignoring the icon filter but not vice versa - fixed!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pin search was failing when the icon key was not visible - fixed!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When an address failed the geocoding process, the process was stopping - fixed!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Also, in the spirit of the season, we’ve added some new holiday themed pins.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Get to mapping once the tryptophan wears off.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many thanks,
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Benjy
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Boo!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">October is now behind us and, in the spirit of Halloween, we have a number treats (in the form of new features) to share.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dropping a ton of pins on a map can be powerful. At the same time, it can make a map cluttered and at times unwieldy. To that end, we’ve enabled the concept of pin filtering as well as pin toggling. Give it a try on your active maps...we think you’ll like it.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But that’s not all when it comes to pins! Many of you have asked about resizing pins - requesting the ability to make them bigger or smaller based on a specific use case. Pin size configuration is now live and in the wild allowing you to start small (as low as 50% of the standard pin size) or go big (up to 300% of the standard pin size).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We get a fair number of questions about printing maps. To that end, we’ve added a print button to the manage maps page and map view page. We’ve also hidden some footer information upon print to make things look a bit cleaner.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Map sharing has also been improved. We’ve added share buttons on the manage maps page and refactored the share via email process.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Every now and again we get a request to delete a user’s account. While it makes us a bit sad, we of course comply. To make the process easier, we’ve enabled a self serve approach to account deletion on the account privacy tab.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Got questions about mapalist? If so, head on over to our updated FAQ page (it’s been a long time coming) for answers.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Got an idea for a new feature? Send us a note and let us know.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Happy mapping,
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Benjy and Brian
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">P.S. You can see the full monty of features we added this month and since this year's reboot by checking out the ever updated release notes.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">September was another fantastic month in terms of feature development. The majority of our focus over the last 30 days or so was on improving the user experience associated with map creation. The process has been simplified and streamlined through a lot of work on the back-end. There are now fewer steps and error messaging/handling is a heck of a lot better a well. Please give the new map creation wizard a try...we’re pretty sure it will change your life!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Oh, and while you’re at it, feel free to select 1 of the 9 new kitten icons available. So cute!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In other news, we now provide granular visibility into your map views - when each view occurred and the associated IP address in addition to the location of the viewer (nicely visualized on a map of course).

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Why did we spend time on this?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sending passwords via email on reset and requiring security Q+A, ... these were normal for 2007 when we started this, but UX and opsec best practices has evolved.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Users had been having trouble w/ the existing workflow, which meant user pain and our time to service - more time on support means less time on developing.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What was the approach?
It’s all here!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hello Mappers,

We’re proud to share that one of your most requested features is now live - the ability to edit existing maps. From the manage page, simply click on the edit map button to be whisked away to a magical place that allows you to change all the settings for your map (and make your wildest dreams come true). That means no need to recreate your maps just to change the map type, advanced criteria, icons, or any other attributes for that matter. We’ve also enabled map cloning from the manage page as a nice to have feature.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Piggybacking on last month’s release of custom map icons, we've added support for JPG and GIF formats (in addition to PNG and SVG). We've also added to the stock set of icons available through the normal map creation process. Behind the scenes, map security and privacy has also been a focus.

Last but not least, for those that want to add some flair to their maps, we’ve added custom map styles - pink, retro, night, aubergine*, silver, and dark. Now that map editing is enabled, you can easily give them a go on your existing maps.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hello Mappers,

Hope your summer (or winter for those in the southern hemisphere) is off to a fantastic start.

Exciting times here at mapalist! We’ve been busy jumping into our admittedly aging code base, rolling out new features, and thinking about what’s on the horizon.

In the last 30 days we’ve made some awesome progress (if we don’t say so ourselves). Most of the site is now mobile friendly, Unicode/UTF8 support has been added (finally!), and a ton of old code has been refactored to improve things like synchronization between maps and sheets.

A Release Notes page is now available for your viewing pleasure. It offers insight into what’s new as well as a view into what’s next in the queue development.

Got something in mind? Please give us a shout and share your ideas.

Of course, we’ve also added a new pricing plan that now supports self service changes along with configurable usage alerts. Thank you to our current subscribers for both your support and patience as we worked out the kinks.

Sincerely,

Your mapalist Teammap a listhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01020311655848539803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6446448640471306105.post-59602741934870190042019-08-09T09:04:00.002+01:002019-08-09T09:55:30.487+01:00Custom Icons... and other Features of Note Hello Mappers,
Ready to give it a whirl? Make all your custom icon dreams come true. We hope this long time coming highly requested update is intuitive, but just in case, we added a step by step.

Log in and click on your username (upper right) to visit the account page.

Click on the custom map settings tab.

If you have an image ready to go, click on the box to upload (we support PNG and SVG formats).

If not, visit images.google.com and search for “PNG” or “SVG” followed by the type of image you’re looking for (e.g., “PNG baseball bat”, “SVG windmill”) - from there you can save and upload it.

Rinse and repeat for as many images you desire.

In other release related news, we’ve updated the account page with tabs making it easier to navigate. On that same page (on the billing tab), we’ve also added transparency in addition to enabling you to download invoices and receipts. Our full release notes, as always, can be found here.
You all have created nearly 700,000 maps using our solution to date; for that we’re amped and thankful.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Since 2007, we have provided you the ability to quickly create, view, share, and update an unlimited number of maps at no cost. What was created around a simple use case for a friend’s wedding (see below) turned into a useful solution for a user base of now over 115,000. Huzzah!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Over the past 12 years, we’ve received donations from happy users that have covered a small portion of our costs. More than anything though, each donation made us smile and reinforced our desire to continue supporting the solution year over year. Thanks to all of you that have kept us motivated!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This model was sustainable until Google, out of nowhere, announced a new pricing policy for developers (like us) using their mapping services. In the spring of 2018, Google started charging heavily for maps usage - they essentially raised prices by 1400%.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For a year, we continued to self-fund the solution, but recently reached a point where the model became unsustainable. To that end, we’ve decided to add a paid plan to our service.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">MapAList will remain 100% free of charge for users that have fewer than 10 maps and fewer than 100 views per map. For those exceeding these limits, we have created a simple monthly paid plan allowing for the creation of an unlimited number of maps, and up 2000 map views across all maps in your account per month.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We realize that some users will require more than 2000 map views per map per month and are actively working on a solution. Please feel free to shoot us a note in the meantime if you can’t wait.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Thank you for your support over the years and for sticking with us as things evolve - we sincerely appreciate it,

Just a quick post to announce we recently launched support for the new Google Sheets -- I think they were previously called Google Spreadsheets, but alas, the new name and UI are more aerodynamic...

MapAList has recently been updated to support the new Google Sheets.

To harness these new features, one must re-authorize MapAList's access to one's Google Docs. (Note: This is only required for legacy users.)

Take no action and only (the old) Google Spreadsheets will be supported. Follow the steps below, to keep up with the Joneses, and be able to map from the new Google Sheets, as well as the old format.

Steps:
1) Go to mapalist.com and log in
2) Go to MapAList's Google Auth Page
3) Click "Accept" on the Google page to enable MapAList to use your Google Sheets on your behalf
3.5) 10 push-ups, because if you don't have your health...
4) Try creating your map again
5) Let us know how you fared

What you are doing is switching your account from AuthSub (the way we previously accessed users' spreadsheets) to OAuth2 (the new way), and the new way should enable the new Google Sheets to work in MapAList.

Good luck, and please let us know how it goes.

Cheers,
We see maps all the time that include email addresses and/or phone numbers in the pin pop up bubbles. What you may not know is that it's easy to make those email addresses and phone numbers "active". In other words, you can create your map such that someone looking at it can click on the values in the pin pop up bubbles to initiate an email or a phone call (via Skype). This makes your map more way more interactive. Let's take a look at how it's done...

What does it look like from a spreadsheet perspective?

Just like hyperlinks, the key here is all in the way you enter data into your Google Spreadsheet. A little HTML does the trick. Using "mailto" and "callto" make this a pretty straightforward process.

Scroll to the right in the frame below and take a look a the third column in the spreadsheet titled E-mail Link. It contains the HTML required to initiate a clickable email link in your pin pop up bubble.

The fourth column, titled Phone Link, contains the HTML required to initiate a clickable email link in your pin pop up bubble. Note that the callto tag can be followed by either a telephone number or a Skype ID. Either will work as long as Skype is configured to "Associate Skype with callto: links: in the SKYPEMENU>TOOLS>OPTIONS>ADVANCED OPTIONS.

Feel free to us the CONCATENATE function to make life easier if you want as explained in the last post (Adding Hyperlinks to Your Map Points).

The HTML is pretty self explanatory so I'm not going to dive into it. Leveraging hyperlinks within maps makes them even more interactive for you and your users.

In this first post about hyperlinks, the goal is to show you how to associate a link to a website with a pin on your map. This will allow whomever is viewing your map to click on a pin and see hyperlinks in the bubble that pops up. Furthermore, it will enable the viewer to click on the hyperlinks to navigate to a URL directly from the map.

Sound cool? It is. Sound hard? Don't worry, we'll walk you through it...

What does it look like from a spreadsheet perspective?
There are 2 approaches to making this work, one certainly more efficient if you are dealing with multiple address records.

In the sample spreadsheet below, you can see a column called Site which is used to associate the address with a website (URL). You can see that in the Site column the MapAList URL has been inserted (http://www.mapalist.com). The next column is called Site Link (you'll have to scroll to the right on the IFrame below to see it). Here's where those 2 different approaches come in...

1. You can simply enter the HTML in the cell. In other words, you can type in the following:

MapAList HQ

2. In order to avoid typing the HTML out for every record, you can use the CONCATENATE function and reference the cell in the Site column that contains the URL. Instead of entering the HTML in cell D2 (column 4 row 2), you would enter the following:

=CONCATENATE("", A2,"")

So what the heck do those HTML tags mean?

This isn't a HTML tutorial, but we can still break it down for you briefly...

<a target='_new' href='http://mapalist.com'>MapAList HQ

target='_new' - the target attribute tells your browser to open the link in a new window

href='http://mapalist.com' - the link URL tells your browser what URL to open in that new window

MapAList HQ - the link text defines what will be displayed (and clickable)

Okay, you've got the link in the spreadsheet - now what?

This is the easy part. All you have to do is referance the column in the spreadsheet that contains your link in Step 2b where you assign your fields to your map. When I ran through it with my wife for the first time she was rather impatient and starting asking me why she couldn’t change the pin colors/styles. I explained that she could and that I would walk her through it in the advanced grouping tutorial.

Advanced grouping enables a lot more than simply grouping based on distinct values in a column. With advanced grouping, MapAList supports the use of operators and comparison values to create grouping rules. It then allows you to choose the pin image associated with each group. Let me show you what I mean…

What does it look like from a spreadsheet perspective?

What are we talking about here?

Creating basic maps that simply map all addresses are useful, but grouping allows you to kick things up a notch.

Let’s say you are mapping your wedding attendee list for your wedding website and want to allow the map viewer to easily differentiate between the bride’s family and the groom’s family. MapAList has a Map Type built to handle just that – it’s called Group by Distinct Column Values (using unique pin images) and can be selected in Step 4 – Configure Map of the map creation process.

This Map Type allows you to tell MapAList which column in your worksheet contains the grouping attribute. MapAList then examines the values in that column and assigns a unique pin image to each distinct value. Running with the wedding example, what this means is that you would need a column in your worksheet that associates each address with the bride or groom…let’s take a look at an example.

What does it look like from a spreadsheet perspective?
In the sample spreadsheet below, you can see a column called Group which is used to distinguish each address as a member of the bride’s family, a member of the groom’s family, or a friend. Note that you may need to click on the image below and drag to the right to see this column (due to the way Blogger sizes iframes). I could have called the column anything I wanted – for example Family or Side, MapAList doesn’t care. I could also have additional values in the Group column – for example Groomsmen and Bridesmaids. The point I’m trying to get across is that the number of groups is not limited to 3. You could have 50…all MapAList needs to know is the name of the column that contains the grouping attributes. So let’s see what we get when we map this sheet…

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pqacvdx2XdPdkS4tSqvidBA

What does it look like from a map perspective?

What you can see is that MapAList selected red pins to represent the addresses associated with the bride’s family white pins to represent the groom’s family, and green pins to represent friends. If my worksheet had contained addresses with a Group called Groomsmen, we would have seen a 4th pin type on the left side of the map that represented the Groomsmen addresses and the associated pins on the map.

Okay – so walk me through it step by step…
The process is very much like making a basic map that shows all addresses – the key difference is in Step 4 – Configure Map below:

Step 4 – Configure Map
•Choose Group by Distinct Column Values (using unique pin images).

Click on the image to take a closer look

•Choose the Column that contains the attribute that you would like to group by.

Click on the image to take a closer look

•Click on the Preview Map button to display your map. Over 80% of the feature requests we’ve received are, well, features that already exist within the base MapAList solution.

What does that tell us?

What it tells me is that we need to do a better job articulating the feature set MapAList has to offer out of the box...and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

For the next several weeks we will be publishing installments of Taking Your Maps to the Next Level – a series of short tutorials meant to enable you, the user, to get more out of MapAList. Each installment will focus on a single feature, show examples of both spreadsheets and maps, and provide step by step instructions to make it work.

Here’s the current plan…

01/02/09 –Basic Grouping to Show Differentiation
01/09/09 – Advanced Grouping to Show Differentiation
01/16/09 – Adding Hyperlinks to Your Map Points
01/23/09 – Adding E-mail & Phone Calls (via Skype) to Your Map Points

01/30/09 – Adding Images & Iframes to your Map Points

If you have other ideas for topics please give us a shout.

--The Map Commissioner (E-mail)
map a listhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01020311655848539803noreply@blogger.com
